Ch’i is energy. Lifeforce energy. It flows through everything. Every object. Every person. Everything. If we could actually see vibrating molecules, we’d have a better understanding of how ch’i (chee) flows. That would make learning feng shui so much easier. But, since we can’t see energy with our physical eyes, in Black Hat Feng Shui we use our sixth sense – our mind’s eye or intuition.
Terah Kathleen Collins writes about opening your “feng shui eyes”. You look at your home, feeling how the ch’i flows. It takes a little practice, but it’s an eye-opening experience once you get started.
Imagine you’re a first-time visitor to your home. Go outside your front door. What to do you see, smell, hear. Is it pleasing? Are there steps up to your front door? Is it beautiful and welcoming?
Walk through your home, room by room, and feel the energy. No preconceived notions. Just how does it feel to you. This is the first step of opening your feng shui eyes and noticing how the energy flows in your home.
I like to use the analogy of water flowing when I envision ch’i in a space. The primary flow is in through the front door. However, windows allow energy to flow both in and out. Drains – kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms – take ch’i out, quickly.
Then look at the architecture of your living space. For instance, corners in each room. Water would actually puddle in a corner and may become stagnant. If there is clutter anywhere, energy becomes stagnant in those areas, as well.
Feng shui is about balancing the energy in your home, making it harmonious to you. Just you. (well, if anyone else cohabitates with you, it must be cool with them. More on them later.) Every item in your home has energy. Floors, walls, colors, furniture, pictures, lights, and so on. Certain shapes, colors and substances speed ch’i up. Others will slow energy down. Once you open your feng shui eyes, you’ll become more and more aware of how the energy in your home is moving. More importantly, you’ll notice how you want it to move, how it will make you feel better.
Now, don’t get overwhelmed . . . yet. We’re going to go a step at a time. After all, the journey of a thousand miles begins with . . . well, you know the rest.
