Are you watching Design Star on HGTV? It’s still early in season 6 – the second show airs Monday at 9pm/8pm central! If you missed the first episode, go watch it here.
I’ll wait. I want to see if you agree with my take on the designers’ first challenge.
Go ahead – it only takes 40 minutes or so . . . .
Done? So what did you think? Okay, I’ll go first. I promise not to rant and rave too much.
Too much.
I chose this photo above when all the designers first meet atop the loft in New York. In walks Blanche, asking, “Are you certified? Are you certified?”
Um, yeah. The one who was so concerned with certifications (I’m assuming ASID certifications) is the first one to get the boot.
I could tell you exactly why that is so satisfying to me, but I’ll save that for another time. It’s much more interesting to review some of the rooms. Just some because, truly, I wasn’t ‘wowed’ by that many.
Hey! It’s a reality show. We’re supposed to express our opinions, aren’t we? Isn’t that the whole appeal of this new genre?
And you know I’m gonna have an opinion about the tree ‘mural’ Karl painted. To be fair, I have absolutely no problem with Karl. He plainly stated it was an experiment and he never billed himself as a muralist.
My issue was more with Vern, Candace & Genevieve’s reaction to the ‘mural’. Ok, yes, it did add vertical height to the space. Which it sorely needed with all the weird soffit-looking architecture. But they were a bit overly impressed, in my opinion.
C’mon. David Bromstad is the mentor on the show. Now David can rock a tree mural. So, Judges, I’m taking issue with the label ‘mural’ in this room.
‘Wall treatment.’
Or ‘paint effect.’
Not ‘mural’, please.
And, AND, Karl won the challenge largely based upon his ‘mural’. That and his space planning.
Hello?!? Karl’s space planning?
What about Kellie’s space planning?
When they first entered their room I saw that nook under the staircase and wondered what in the heck they were going to do with it. Kellie created a lovely little sitting area. In fact, Genevieve remarked how welcoming it was. It was the first thing the judges noticed in the room.
I’d say that was very clever space planning. Okay, so she spilled a ton of white paint all over. Who hasn’t shaken a paint can without the lid tightly on?
Okay, I haven’t done that either. But, for me, the cute nook trumped the mondo mess.
Moving on to the Great Room. My impression: nice and nothing jars my eye. No weird colors or strange art. Nice. I thought this was a tough space too because of its size and multi-functions. Although if there was a mention of budget, I missed it.
Let’s talk about the coffee table made out of tires. Leslie walked into a store, saw the table, presumably measured it, and bought it.
It’s black. It’s rectangular. It fits the space.
The fact that it’s made out of old tires – does that deserve all the ooooh’s and ah’s? I think the fact that her partner seemed to talk down to her in every package and Leslie kept her cool was way more impressive.
But then, I’m not certified.
Which may explain why I’m not a fan of grey rooms. Particularly this deep of grey. A bit too dreary for my taste. But I did like the mirror on the wallpaper inset. The rest of the room? Largely forgettable.
Except for that white pillar in the corner. Whud up with that?
And finally, the ‘piece de resistance’.
- Orange walls in Bedroom.
- Giant ‘Relax’ unpainted plywood sign on orange walls in Bedroom.
- That match unpainted plywood shelves with accessories that don’t coordinate with orange walls or bedroom.
And while we’re on this room – what’s up with those fluorescent lights? I just noticed those.
Okay. Your turn. Go ahead! Rant, rave, or tell me what (or who?) really impressed you.
It’s a little too soon to be impressed isn’t it, though?
So, are you hooked yet? I have to admit that I am.
But I also have to admit that there’s no way in hell I’d be a contestant on Design Star. No, thank you. And subject myself to a bunch of un-credentialed bloggers ranting and raving over my tree murals?
Nope. I already had my little brush with HGTV fame last year for an episode of Yard Crashers. It airs this December for their Christmas special.
In the meantime, let’s just see who can play nice on DesignStar, who can choose a somewhat decent wall color, and who wins the White Room challenge Monday night.
