No Sew Tree Skirt

In all the years I’ve been decorating Christmas trees I’ve never had a tree skirt.

Ever.

I mean, what’s the point? Aren’t there just gonna be a ton of prettily wrapped presents under the tree anyway?

A swirl of fabric always worked just fine for me. Until this year.

Two things – one, I saw a poinsettia tree skirt in a catalog that begged to be knocked off. And two, there’s a distinct possibility that there won’t be a ton of prettily wrapped presents under our tree this year.

Oh, don’t feel sorry for us widows over here. We just choose to buy our presents all year ‘round instead of waiting for December 25.

Whether you’ve used tree skirts before or not, you’re going to love this one. First off, it’s NO-SEW, people! You have to love that! And also, it’s cute.

Oh, one more thing, it hardly takes any time at all.

How To Make a No-Sew Poinsettia Tree Skirt

You’ll need approximately 2 yards of fabric that doesn’t ravel. I used this faux suede I picked up at Walmart but felt would work great too.

You’ll also need:

• white chalk for marking the leaves
• scissors
• gold glitter paint
• fine tip applicator

 

Flip the fabric to the wrong side to make your chalk markings.

I measured under my tree and decided the leaves should be 24” long. It might differ depending on the width of your tree.

Then just draw a big leaf.

Don’t worry if it’s not perfect. You’ll be making 6-8 of them and they overlap.

Once you have one leaf cut out, just use that one as a pattern for the other large leaves.

You’ll also want some smaller leaves, about half the size of your large leaves.

Two yards gave me more leaves than I needed but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Got any ideas for two 24” long faux suede and glitter poinsettia leaves?

I wasn’t sure whether to use gold or red glitter paint. I really loved the red but thought it might be too subtle so I went with the gold.

Martha Stewart makes fine tip paint applicators that screw right on to any of her multi-surface paints, which made this project a breeze.

You could also use puffy paint or pour glitter paint into a plastic fine tip applicator if you have one of those.

Of course, you could always use a paint brush too.

But then the whole “quick project” thing would go right out the window.

ahem.

For the leaf ‘veins’, paint a line up the middle then some on either side.

I made some curve inward and others curve outward, not particularly on purpose. (I just noticed it when I edited these pics.)

It doesn’t take that long for the glitter paint to dry, depending on your temps, of course.

I did this last week before the artic blast froze 7/8 of our country and the leaves dried within an hour. Today I think the glitter would freeze faster than it would dry.

Once dry, or frozen, lay three leaves under the tree, evenly spaced. About. Sort of.

Just eyeball it.

Then place three more leaves in between those original three leaves. There will be some overlapping.

Then layer on the smaller leaves in the same fashion.

That’s it!

Now, I realize if you have littles running around (human or furry) these pretty leaves just laying underneath the tree might be a bit too tempting. You might try using Velcro dots to secure the leaves into place.

I make no guarantees. I’m thinking if your tree has bright, shiny ornaments, those will be much more fascinating than a piece of fabric with a line or two of glitter on it.

Isn’t that a fun tree skirt?

And it looks oh-so much better than a wad of fabric wound around the base.
