Are you a trendsetter? In fashion or your home, either one – are you up-to-date with Style?
Me, I’ll never be accused of setting a trend. Unless Levis spotted with paint suddenly comes into vogue. But that doesn’t mean I’m not observant.
Observant may be a little too strong a word, but I do notice something after I’ve seen it. Over and over and over again. Blogging will do that for you. Chevron stripes. Chalkboard paint. Burlap. Even I tend to jump on some of the ‘trend’ bandwagons eventually. But it usually takes me a while.
So I feel a little odd writing about what I consider to be a new trend – Ombre. You know, where one color fades in tone to the next. Ok. It’s not really new. Not by any means. But over the past few weeks I’ve been seeing it in Blogland.
So much so that I had to start a new Pinterest board. I had to, you understand? It’s part of being a responsible blogger.
But I gotta tell you, from a DIY standpoint, ombre scared me. I mean, if one of my clients asked me to paint an ombre wall, I think I’d tell them I’m ombre-phobic and strange, uncontrollable things happen to my nose when I see ombre. (One of my blog friends shared that tip when someone asked her to paint clouds on a ceiling. Ok, so she didn’t say ‘nose’ but it’s the only body part I could come up with without totally grossing you out.)
And then I saw this . . .
A paint chip lampshade. How clever is that? Yes, I see a lot of paint chip projects all over, but this post is about ombre. And Brittany @ Pretty Handy Girl had to be the first DIY-ombre project I saw, of course. Because that’s just how Brittany rolls.
Then I saw this . . .
This is do-able, dontcha think? Either buy little sample pots in varying shades (love those sample pots!) or just buy a quart and keep adding white to it, a little more for each shade.
Not that I came up with the add–a-little-white idea on my own – I got it from Living with Lindsay on her ombre lampshade tutorial. Yes, my friends, she painted this lampshade. Ombre.
Here’s another ombre project, inspired by Antropologie. I hear Anthropologie has a bunch of ombre items. Not that I’d know because I’m the one in the paint-spotted-levis. But I’ve heard things. And seen great knock-offs like this desk painted by Sisters of The Wild West, featured at DecorHacks.
Speaking of DecorHacks, one of the gals there, Amy (of ModPodgeRocks fame) came up with her own ombre-DIY project.
She spray-painted this T-shirt in an ombre pattern. Cool, huh? But wait, it gets better – she used acrylic craft paint and Martha’s new sprayer. Yeah – you can now turn craft paint into spray paint. Talk about color options! Plus, plus! she used Mod Podge to make the fabric applique. Head over to ModPodgeRocks and she’ll tell you how she did it.
