Mother’s Day Craft Project – Dipdot Lilacs

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to come up with some quick and easy projects. “Dipdots” are a fun way to paint, for both you and the kiddos!

For this lilac painting, I grabbed a paper gift bag from the dollar store.

 

I used two shades of purple  - Light Lavender & Violet Pansy - and two shades of green – Fresh Foliage & Sap Green. I was going to do another white lilac painting but the purple tissue paper looked cuter than white in the brown paper bag.

To be honest, my mom is pretty much ‘over’ getting painted junk gifts from me. Bless her heart, she has a houseful of them. Some nicer than others. But I will say at least they’re better than the ‘champagne’ bubble bath I always gave her when I was a kid.

Step 1 – paint a slightly curved green ‘stem’.

Step 2 – add some offshoots. These will be covered up for the most part but it helps ‘shape’ the flower.

Step 3 - with a stylus, toothpick or any other small point, dot Violet Pansy on the tips of each stem.

Step 4 - continue dotting the dark purple using the end of a paintbrush.

I haven’t experimented with cotton swabs, but I think they’d work too for a larger flower. I did, however, experiment with mixing white with the purple. Those are the blobs you see at the top. Yes, I could’ve just flipped the bag over and started again, but I’m just keepin’ it real here.

Step 5 – Fill in the center of the flower.

Yes, it can get a little goopy blotchy. *ahem*

Step 6 – dot light lavender in the center.

If the kiddos are painting this, you might want to set this aside to dry before painting leaves to prevent any potential smooshing. (technical term)

Step 7 – for the leaves pick up both shades of green and stroke a basic leaf shape.

(I’ve actually shot a video for these leaves but I just haven’t edited/uploaded it yet. They’re not hard. As a matter of fact, they’re so simple you might wanna over-paint them and you don’t need to.)

Step 8 – ‘connect’ the leaves to the stem with Fresh Foliage green. Continue the line onto the leaves and it’ll act as the center vein.

You can paint this on nearly anything. Since it’s just a grouping of dots, it’ll work on round surfaces like a glass votive, or a mug, or even a T-shirt. Hmm . . . I haven’t done a fabric painting tutorial in quite a while. Lemme see if I can pull something together in time for Mother’s Day, ok?
