Time for Spring Cleaning

I've delayed writing again 'cuz I didn't know where to start - feng shui, painting, or decorating? I've read other blogs for inspiration, but just kept reading, not writing.

Today it dawned on me. When I teach feng shui, the first step is always to declutter. And with a beautiful stretch of sunny skies for the past few days, spring cleaning is calling. Are you hearing the same note?

Why is decluttering so important in feng shui? Feng shui is all about energy flow, "ch'i" is the Chinese term for energy. Everything in our homes elicits a feeling from us, whether you're conscious of it or not. Somehow it came into your home and it holds a certain vibration. Clutter is usually stuff we haven't sorted through or designated a place for. So it is stagnant energy. And where it resides in the home is also stagnant. So before we get into the bagua map or elements, I'm going to start by decluttering my spaces.

For most of us, it's overwhelming. We don't have the abundance of time or space to do a full overhaul of our homes. So I'm going to start with the spaces I'm in the most - my bedroom and my home office/studio. Clothes will go to charity. Papers, magazines, catalogs go to recycle. That's my project for tomorrow, Sunday.

Let me know what you do to get inspired to spring clean and declutter. Do you do a drawer at a time? Or a major overhaul?

Let's get the ch'i flowing in our homes, which will bring us harmony and well-being. Next time, I'll write about the bagua map, so we can concentrate on specific areas.
