Now, I know my blog is called Mural Maker & More, and I have spent the past year only posting my own painting projects. I also know that you’re supposed to have a ‘niche’ when it comes to your blog. Well, guess what? I can’t do it.
I’ve tried. Really, I have. But I’m into so much more than just painting. Decorating, feng shui, crafts, florals – just to name a few. So I’ve decided to write about all of it.
At some point I may rename this blog or break off into another one, but for now I’m just going to follow my heart and write about what I love!
So let’s talk Turquoise!
As you probably already know, turquoise is the color of 2010. How is that determined? There’s this group called the Color Marketing Group that actually picks colors the design and manufactured trends. I don’t know all the in’s & out’s, but I know they picked Turquoise for this year.
Then there’s Pantone – the self- acclaimed world renowned authority on color. They actually have a standardized color system. If you work in any part of graphic design, you’re familiar with Pantone. Well, they picked Turquoise for 2010 too.
How the CMG & Pantone work together, or not, I have no idea. I just know every year they come up with a Color of the Year. And haven’t you seen turquoise everywhere?
It usually starts in graphics – magazine & TV ads, websites, etc. are using turquoise in some fashion. Then fashion, and then home decor.
Bloggers like The Finishing Touch & Shelterpop start writing about it.
While The Finishing Touch uses feng shui but Shelterpop doesn’t, it still goes to show that turquoise is here to stay – for this year at least. Both agree there is a sensory reaction to any color.
When you see the color turquoise what image in nature comes to mind? The sea, the sky, Caribbean or Hawaii? Does it make you feel cool & relaxed? Or energized & refreshed? Everyone has their own personal reaction to any given color.
From an artistic, design standpoint, turquoise is a combination of blues & greens. It has the cool, refreshing tones of water. Or if you add a little more green to make aqua, it has the vibrancy of spring. Either way, both are soothing vibrations.
Would turquoise work in your home? Here’s a tip: bring pops of color in 3 areas – say a pillow on the couch, print over the fireplace, and a vase on a side table. It spreads the color throughout the room and balances it.
Here’s how I used it in my mom’s bedroom.
Okay, I’m off to find some more turquoise decorating ideas. Do you have any to share? I’d love to know.

Colleen! I love the look! So fresh! It won't work at my house but I still appreciate the pallet. I love the idea of pillows! When I was making my chair toppers I thought polka dot in turquoise would be so cute! It is a very popular color this year. I am planning on making my neighbor some pillows in this color. I enjoyed your post as usual!
