31 Days of Easy Paint Projects: Day 8 – Spooky Burlap Runner

I might be a little late jumping on the ‘burlap train’ but you gotta admit, I’m jumping with both feet! First there was the stenciled burlap runner. Then came the burlap fall leaf mantel scarf.

I really thought I was done with burlap for a while. Until I saw this on Pinterest . . .

Pottery Barn. Gah! I just had to give this a try. I mean, c’mon! It’s just black paint on burlap, right? Ok, so upon further checking PB’s runner isn’t burlap, but it looks close enough for me. And I still had a strip left . . . hey, what’s one more burlap runner this season?

And it’s a no-sew project too. Yep, I just frayed each edge.

Wanna know how to make it? It’s seriously easy. Here’s what you’ll need (purchase links are at bottom of the post):

• Burlap cut to desired size
• Mod Podge or Fraycheck (unless you want to hem your edges)
• Black Sharpie felt pen
• Licorice paint (any black acrylic will work)
• Fabric Medium (optional but it helps the paint move a little easier)
• old paintbrushes (you need to ‘scrub’ the paint into the fabric)

Ok, let’s get started!

First, mark off a border on all four edges with chalk or pins.

Then Mod Podge that marked line. This will stop the fraying from going too far. Make sure you put something underneath the burlap to protect your work surface.

Draw your designs with the Sharpie.

Then paint! Since I only used black, I just painted around the moon and painted horizontal sections for the sky.

That white line above is the wet Mod Podge. It dries completely clear though.

Paint your background first. I added some hills. Just paint continuous little mounds and they’ll look like hills.

Even though it’s one paint color, you still get some different shades. I had to apply a couple of coats to get a dark black. Especially if you use Fabric Medium.

Ok, so I embellished a little bit and added some birds on the tree and a couple shadows in the house windows. I couldn’t resist.

A Simple Owl

Ok, so I didn’t do a graveyard tutorial and pattern. But look! A cross. A rectangle. A fresh grave that’s just a mini hill. And that’s supposed to be a shovel next to it.

The fence? Just a rectangle with little lines up and down it and ‘wires’ running from post to post.

What d’ya think?

I love it. I can’t remember the last time I painted something with just one color. I might have to try this again.

Don’t worry. I’m all out of burlap.

And anyways, I put this in the dining room where there isn’t any other burlap.

Now I just gotta decide which candles. Tall? Or short? Or neither.

I still want to look at my new BFF for a while. That’s burlap-friend-forever.
