Day 17–Harvest Fruit Roundup

Hello! Hope you had a great weekend. Now that I’m on the back-end of the 31 Day blogging challenge, I’m gearing up for Christmas. But I want to sneak in a few Thanksgiving – or just Fall – paint projects too.

One of the most iconic Thanksgiving images is the cornucopia. You know – the horn of plenty, filled to the brim with harvested goodness. Do you use a cornucopia on your Thanksgiving table?

Not me. I did more than my fair share of cornucopias when I was a floral designer for a craft store. Every year we’d get cases of them and every year my boss would say make something cute so we can move these and every year I’d have the same response.

Blech.

Cornucopias are just not my favorite thing to make. Stuff a bunch of fruit, maybe a few flowers, a couple fall leaves and call it  . . . design? I don’t think so.

But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like a cornucopia, say, painted on a table runner. With some napkins to match. Or maybe a floorcloth? Maybe.

If I was gonna paint a cornucopia, I’d start with a big ol’ pretty pumpkin ‘cause that’d take up the majority of the opening.

But then I’d want some rich tones like luscious red pomegranates. I like bringing some burgundy into Thanksgiving. (I mean ‘burgundy’ the color, not the wine. Although that would work for Thanksgiving too.) It also tones down the bright oranges from Halloween.

So maybe a red apple or two?

That might be a lot of red and orange so maybe a pear or two to lighten things up.

And of course I’ll have to throw in some fall leaves but I’ll wait and see what colors to use until I know how the reds, oranges and golds shape up.

But those are all round shapes, aren’t they? Maybe some cattails or stalks of wheat? Yeah. I think those would work.

What else, what else . . . oh, I know . . .

Some lovely grapes spilling out of the basket. Round again, I know, but smaller round.

Now, what color of grapes – deep red? Purple? The red would blend well with the poms and apples. But the purple would make all the golds and oranges pop. That’s be pretty.

Ooooo, how about a sunflower or two?

Decisions, decisions.

I better get busy.
