Just Paint It: Salvaged Planter with Spraypaint

There’s “recycling” and “upcycling”, and then there’s salvage . . .

When something really should be considered trash.

Those things that have set outdoors for years, in the rain, in the snow, in the heat . . . and the movers looked at each other and then back at you and said -

“You’re keeping that?!?”

And you nod your head because you know with a little elbow grease,

. . . and a whole lotta white vinegar, you can get that old planter, that . . . what kind was it? . . .

oh, yes, that old brass planter you can get ready for . . . something.

While a couple coats of hammered copper breathed some life into it, the spray paint couldn’t hide all of the dings and dents accumulated over years of neglect.

No, what we need is a Plan . . . something unique, something special for this poor, abused, formerly brass, should be trash, planter.

I know! What we’ll do is stick some fall leaves all over it and then spray paint another color on top and then we’ll have copper leaves peeking through.

Good idea, yes?

Maybe. How can we get the leaves to stick on there temporarily?

Of course . . . Floetrol! It’s what I use for glazing, although any glaze works as a temporary glue. Floetrol just happens to be cheaper.

On went the fall leaves, paying absolutely no attention to neatness.

My kind of project.

Then I sprayed the entire planter with Oil Rubbed Bronze. Maybe too dark? I’m not sure . . .

We’ll see.

Well . . . get too close, and she ain’t pretty.

But set her on a spraypainted antiqued chair, plop some pretty yellow mums in her . . .

And my poor forlorn planter went from trash to treasure, in a matter of minutes, with a shiny new coat of oil rubbed bronze and pretty copper fall leaves camouflaging all of the dings and dents.

Don’t you love happy endings? That involve spray paint? Me too.
